Martin
BACH

Hi, I’m Martin 👋

I currently work as a Product Manager at Oracle. My focus areas include Multilingual Engine (MLE), Oracle’s ability to run JavaScript code directly within the database, and I also care deeply about DevOps, CI/CD, Platform Engineering and Cloud Native applications. And of course everything else in that space like container orchestration (k8s) and and the surrounding ecosystem….

Before joining Oracle, I spent 8 eventful years at Enkitec working with some of the most talented engineers in the industry. We worked on some of the highest-profile (Exadata) systems at the time. Granted, it was stressful, but a lot of fun.

Everything before that is probably too far back in the past to be of relevance. LinkedIn has the full story if you’re curious.

Occupational Hazards & Areas of Interest

Over the past decade, I’ve come to appreciate the need for repeatable, reliable deployments. I spent a lot of time “in the cloud” writing Terraform and Ansible scripts. You find a lot of my posts cover these topics.

Now that AI-assisted development is all the rage, it’s only natural for me to investigate the benefits of this new way of working. Although there aren’t too many posts covering this subject on the blog, more will definitely follow.

If I had to summarise what I do
Infrastructure DBA
Maximum Availability Enthusiast
Linux Admin
Performance Geek
DevOps & SRE Enabler
Cloud Architect
AI-Savvy Developer

But I’m pretty good at getting up-to-speed with anything in no time

Writing & Publishing

In addition to this weblog, I’ve had the chance to contribute to a few books.

  • Pro Oracle Database 11g RAC on Linux (Apress, co-author) this book somehow became a go-to reference for 11.2 RAC
  • Expert Oracle Database 12c Consolidation this is my solo attempt at making consolidation strategies a bit more digestible (still not entirely sure how I pulled that off)
  • Expert Oracle Exadata (2nd edition) is a prime example of a proper team effort with many great colleagues from Enkitec

They were hard work, but very rewarding.

Certification & Community Recognition

Over time I obtained lots of certificates, the full list is on LinkedIn if you’re interested. I’m most proud that I updated my Oracle Certified Master (OCM) certificate for Oracle Database 12c, having passed the grueling two-day exam first in 2008 for Oracle Database 10g.

I am equally proud to be a member of Symposium 42, and the OakTable network. Before joining Oracle I was part of the Ace Programme, if memory serves me right I became an Ace in 2008 and an Ace Director in 2012. As per the rules, I lost that status when joining Oracle.
